SATURATED FATS AND HEALTH: A REASSESSMENT

Just accepted to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on 16th June 2020, is a study which included participation by well-known low carber Jeff S Volek, Founder of Virta Health.

Saturated Fats and Health: a Reassessment and Proposal for Food-based Recommendations: JACC State-of-the-Art Review is available to subscribers or at a cost of $35 dollars USD.

The abstract, is available on the website and states that after analysing both randomised trials and observational studies, there were NO beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease and mortality, from reducing saturated fat intake.

MaisonCool is not a nutrition website. We just share things which we come across. If you believe that despite global galloping obesity and diabetes, that the standard low fat diet is something you believe in and that Ancel Keys’ flawed research is gold standard, that’s fine. Your health, your body.

If on the other hand, you want to read up and examine the idea of swapping low carb for low fat, you need to do your own research and come to your own conclusion. Although more people are on keto, paleo or low carb diets these days, it goes against the mainstream.

It can be said of the participating researchers in this study, that they have a vested interest in supporting beef and dairy farmers and their marketing boards. It can be said of researchers advocating plant-based food, that they often have vested interests too. Therefore, instead of going no further than a headline, we should track down the studies or abstracts, so that we can see the interests behind the headlines and decide for ourselves.
