Here in the UK, lard used to be a necessity for making good flaky pastry. It’s pure fat, without water, unlike butter. Some home cooks still use it. It’s not the most glamourous of food products, being rendered pork fat and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of choice.

Tesco
Although Tesco has sold Tesco Everyday Valye Lard in the past, currently, it is selling T.E.Stockwell & Co lard at 39p for 250g (11/07/20). The antioxidant is rosemary extract and the lard is 98,8 grams of fat per 100g. No manufacturer’s details are given.

Foodservice company, Brakes sells Kerrymaid lark in a pack of 40 x 250g packs for £23.19. This equates with 57p per pack. buying at Iceland, saves 7p per pack.

Foodservice Direct will sell you 40 x 250g blocks of Kerrymaid via Amazon Prime for £34.95 which works out at 87p per pack. Not a good deal. If you’re after Black Country pork dripping, Iberico pork fat or any kind of Italian lard, it’s worth a look to get a feel of prices.
