William Morrison founded Wm Morrison Ltd as an egg and butter merchant in 1899, making it the third oldest retailer in the UK, From a stall in Bradford market, Morrison expanded to become a small chain of grocery shops in Yorkshire.
His son Ken (Sir Kenneth Duncan Morrison CBE 1931-2017) took over the running of the company in 1952. He instituted the first self-service grocery store in Bradford, in 1961. By 1967, he had the company listed on the Stock Exchange and the 1999 centenary was marked with the 100th store opeing.
The takeover of Safeway in 2004 was a £3 billion deal and came as a shock to consumers. many of whom, in the South, hadn’t heard or Morrisons. Morrisons had under 200 supermarkets at the time and was the minnow which swallowed the far bigger Safeway fish.
In 2014, Morrisons teamed up with online delivery expert Ocado, to roll out a home delivery service.
Currently private equity companies are fighting over Morrisons and the company will pass out of Morrison family hands.
