When I started my journey to low carb, I was led by my blood glucose meter. I couldn’t understand why it was, that after a lower carb meal eg steak and salad, my blood glucose was so much lower. I was too young to have been conscious of Dr Robert C Atkins. It was the one diet which my carb-loving serial dieter mother hadn’t tried.

Healthcare professionals in the UK can be really clueless about carbs. They push them on people with diabetes, in a way which they wouldn’t do with coeliacs. I was told that if I didn’t eat carbs, I would be dead in six months. A Diabetes Nurse Specialist, tried to make me promise to eat porridge instead of eggs. I was put on meds four days after diagnosis and given no chance to evaluate my diet and read up.

I would wave photocopies at my GP who would look at me sceptically. I was the only patient with diabetes in his practice who got her HbA1c to normal from 13% above normal. Testing strips for my blood glucose meter were de-prescribed.

There’s not a single doctor in my county (state) who advocates low carb or keto. All of the people who could benefit, are actively discouraged. The only NHS dietary advice, for everyone other than coeliacs, is to eat carbs.

Back in 2007, I saw nothing about low carb diets. I didn’t discover them until 2012. One of the reasons I want to put a range of info on the website, is to encourage people to talk to their doctors and read up and make decisions about their own health with their physicians.
