Cost Plus was founded in 1958 by William Amthor, who rented a Fisherman’s Wharf warehouse in San Francisco. He’s the key person responsible for the importation of rattan furniture into the USA. The name came from the concept, ‘cost plus 10%’.
The company listed on NASDAQ in 1996 and was sold to Bed Bath and Beyond in 2012. Bed Bath and Beyond announced store closures in October 2019 and 20 of the 60 store closures were Cost Plus World Market stores. In February 2021, Bed Bath and Beyond sold Cost Plus World Market to Front Burner Retail LP.
Cost Plus World Market is known for furniture rather than food, but stores often have an international foods section.
